Terminology
NEAGE (acronym) -
Near Enough Ain’t Good Enough
Represents the Club’s philosophy for producing quality turnings.
It is particularly applicable to finishing, where all stria should have been removed from the finished turning by the diligent use of a range of sandpaper grades (from coarse thru to extra fine grit sandpaper).
The use of one or more of the following may also help to achieve the desired finish: sanding sealer, EEE, steel wool.
STRIA
A series of ridges, furrows or linear marks.
What causes STRIA? Jerky movements using gouges; frictional bruising from a not-so-sharp bowl gouge; minor catches or “dig ins”; deep sanding scratches; fibre breakout; or maybe forgetting to “rub the bevel” when using a bowl gouge.
